Overview

The Zillow “Unlock Event App” is a pivotal solution to the challenges faced in event management. It was designed to boost user engagement and streamline event operations for the Zillow Unlock event. The app served as an interactive hub for event attendees, providing access to schedules, an interactive homepage, real-time updates, bookmarks, and more. Its aim was to create a seamless and engaging event experience, effectively addressing the identified pain points.

Problem

I discussed Zillow’s traditional event management strategies with the marketing team and we determined they faced critical shortcomings, particularly in terms of efficiency and attendee engagement. The reliance on old-style schedules, manual check-ins, and static information dissemination created pain points. These inefficiencies not only hampered the overall event experience but also led to increased operational overhead for event organizers.

Solution

The need for a robust, interactive digital solution became evident to address these issues and transform the event experience for all attendees. The solution was to develop the Zillow “Unlock Event App,” a comprehensive event management application designed to address these challenges. The app includes a user-friendly interface, real-time updates, an interactive homepage, event location, a personalized travel guide, navigation, event and real-time notifications, bookmarks, and more. It leverages modern design principles and user-centered design to ensure a high-quality user experience.

Role

As the Lead Designer for this project, I was responsible for the overall design and user experience of the Zillow “Unlock Event App.” The role encompassed several key responsibilities:

  • User Research: Conducted extensive user research to understand the needs and pain points of event attendees and organizers.
  • UI/UX Design: Created wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, and interactive prototypes using tools like Figma and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Collaboration: I worked closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, product managers, and the team, to ensure the design aligned with the business goal and user needs. This collaborative approach successfully developed the Zillow “Unlock Event App.”
  • Iteration: Leading the iterative design process, incorporating feedback from usability testing to refine and improve the app continuously.
  • Handoff: I prepared detailed design documentation and facilitated the handoff to Zillow’s vendor developers, ensuring that the vision for Zillow Unlock app was accurately implemented.
User Research

Extensive user research was conducted to ensure the app met user needs. The study included surveys, interviews, and usability testing with potential users such as event attendees and organizers. Insights gained from this research highlighted the need for a user-friendly interface, real-time updates, interactive homepage, event location, personalized travel guide, navigation, event and real-time notifications, bookmarks, and more. These insights directly formed the design and functionality of the app.

Ideation

The ideation phase involved brainstorming sessions and creating initial sketches, wireframes, and user flows. I utilized tools such as Figma and Adobe Creative Suite to visualize concepts and gather feedback from the team. This collaborative approach ensured the design aligned with user needs and business goals.

Iteration

The Zillow “Unlock Event App” was continuously refined through iterative design and development. Feedback from usability testing was incorporated into successive app versions, improving navigation, interface design, and feature functionality. Managing multiple iterations while maintaining design consistency was critical to the app’s development process.

Hand-off to Developers

The handoff to developers was a critical phase in the project. I prepared comprehensive design documentation, including detailed wireframes, low-fidelity to high-fidelity mockups, and interactive prototypes created in Figma. These deliverables were accompanied by a style guide outlining design standards, color schemes, typography, and interaction patterns to ensure consistency. I facilitated handoff meetings with Zillow’s vendor development team to walk through the designs, explain the user flows, and clarify technical requirements. I also provided CSS code snippets for some functions that the team needed. I communicated closely with the developers throughout the development process, addressing questions and ensuring the implementation aligned with the design vision. This structured handoff process ensured a smooth transition from design to development, minimizing discrepancies and enabling the development team to build the app efficiently and accurately according to the design specifications.

Reflection

The Zillow “Unlock Event App” project was a resounding success, significantly enhancing user engagement and operational efficiency for Zillow’s events. Reflecting on the project, several key takeaways emerged:

  • The importance of user-centered design in creating effective digital products.
  • The value of iterative design and continuous user feedback in refining product features.
  • The impact of our collaborative cross-functional teams was instrumental in achieving multiple project goals, underscoring the value of our collective efforts.
  • Being the sole designer for this project was challenging, but I am deeply grateful for the invaluable feedback and collaborations from the team. Collaboration as a whole was pivotal in delivering a high-quality product that not only met user needs but also exceeded stakeholder expectations.
